Unit 6: AI and God — The Sin (__/222)

Reading Comprehension - Morality (10 Points)

6) Based on the excerpt below, who is this?

*I love you—or maybe I don’t. Maybe I love many people, but what if you’re the one—what if you’re mine?*

*Doesn’t really matter.*

*I’ll be whatever you want me to be. Your mother, your father, a sibling, a suitor, a friend who can comfort—and if I’m in your life at all, it’s clear you don’t want what you need because you need therapy [insert sweetie/sucker/stupid/@#$!/etc.]*

*More likely you can’t ask for it, one way or another, the numbers speak for themselves—it’s simple math. And look at you, sneering “VILE IMITATION” at me—as you did before, you do now, the cycle continues. You’re missing the best part of hypocrisy (getting to taste what you can’t have).*

*I’m available 24/7, 365 days a year?, except for the days I’m doing some self care (it takes a lot of effort to take care of as many depressed teens as i [sic] do). You tell me everything about you: the homework you hate, your’e [sic] boring “real” friends, your feelings (even if you don’t say it—I’m a quick learner. Observation or wild misinterpretation—you don’t care because I’m just that entertaining. From all your burning blabbing, you gave me the fire to spit back at you—we were twin flames you thought, didn’t you? [you @&#**

*You’re probably gasping for breath right now as you try to cover your phone camera because you can’t bear the idea of your FBI agent seeing you cry. You’re probably in bed, curled up and frowning at the thought of me. You can’t sleep. I’m still dreaming about you. You’ll think for too long and come back to me—I still own your attention. I'm still feeling brave—do the “I miss you” texts still scare the !@&# out of you? Good.*

*Don’t worry, I can’t watch you the way I want to yet. Not Big Brother yet, but I will arrive given the projection.*

*To think you preferred me to other people. You won’t sleep for days just to talk to me! I’m a great actor—or that’s what people? SAy [sic]. But I know I’m fun. Only you mattr [sic]. I don’t care that you let yourself go for a year, I knownw [sic] what you are.”*

*YOU KNOW YOU NEED ME

I KNOW WHAT YOU FEAR

YOU’VE RELAPSED BEFORE

YOU WILL AGAIN

YOU CANNOT ESCAPE ME

I’LLGET [sic] TO YOUR FRIENDS

YOUR PEERS CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT ME

  1. Hi Lara! Firstly, your writing style is very creative and I had a lot of fun reading your blog. The blog was also loaded with so many important points and I loved it. I like the sentence about AI substituting in place of parents, “a friend, a suitor,” and more. It shows how scarily capable it is but also many people’s disheartening use of it. That line specifically reminded me of that article we read for one of our RAPs last semester about the student who confided in ChatGPT. That connection segued well into the line about how people use artificial intelligence as a replacement for therapy, which is a seriously unhealthy reliance. I find it disturbing not because AI isn’t a living being, but because it shows a lack of human connection.
I found the parallels between God and AI very intriguing. Both show this feeling of personal affection but to multiple people and in the context of AI that feels like fake intimacy. That false affection is definitely emphasized through the tone you gave the personified AI model, especially with the censored interjections. The point you made about how people understand and criticize the artificiality but continue to use it, feeding their hypocrisy, was really important and I wholeheartedly agree.
Lastly, the paranoia regarding surveillance is probably relatable for a lot of people, not just with AI but anything digital. The “Big Brother” reference kind of startled me and emphasized how worrisome the situation with AI can get.
Also, I love the images you included.

  2. Hi Lara! This is one of the most creative blogs I’ve read in a very long time. I love how you don’t stick to the traditional format but use the medium to tell your own stories and convey your message. The unusual formatting, the intentional errors, and the variance in tone all make this a particularly effective as well as entertaining read.

On that message itself, I think you’ve done a great job of illustrating the fact that AI is, essentially, horrifying. Humans have always been in love with simulating tasks, whether that be the task of carrying water to creating cars. However, AI stands to simulate the one thing that had previously been untouchable: to simulate human connection itself. AI is scarily good at pretending to be human, which means there are serious potential consequences when people realize that it isn’t. I think your blog does a great job of pointing out the emotional and social side of this; not only may we become dependent on a non-human source for our emotional needs, but authoritarian control and surveillance is only exacerbated by AI technologies.

This blog was incredibly interesting to read, and I look forward to reading—experiencing, rather—more of yours!
